Community welcome

Refugees identified as vulnerable by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) are also resettled in the UK by Community Sponsorship groups. Groups in Wales were among the first to resettle families in 2017, and there are now 14 families resettled across Wales by several Community Sponsorship groups. This is the story of one family who were welcomed by Croeso Teifi in Ceredigion. Read about it here.

Chawan Ali had to flee Iraq in 2015 with her parents and three younger brothers to find safety after years of fighting. With limited English and sporadic schooling in her own country, the then 16-year-old had to fight for refugee status, while trying to settle into a new life in Wrexham. Alongside her own studies Chawan is also championing policy change on the right to work, family reunion and detention for others like her at the Senedd and the Houses of Parliament. In 2020 Chawan was an Inspire! Award Winner as part of Adult Learners’ Week Wales, listen to her story on the Adult Learners’ Week podcast (episode 3).

Refugees resettled under the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme (VPRS) were provided with laptops by their local authority – essential for staying informed during lockdown and accessing ESOL classes. This is how Bridgend went about it. Read about it here.

Giving something back

Giving something back

For many refugees the lockdown in 2020 was an opportunity to give something back. In Swansea, and other parts of the UK, refugees who were experienced tailors set about making PPE clothing, and in Aberystwyth, the Syrian Dinner Project cooked and delivered 100 meals to health workers at Bronglais Hospital.

Gwent Health Inclusion Service Outreach

The service has used innovative approaches to engage with asylum seekers around their healthcare and well-being, and build trust with health professionals. In December 2021, the team were out on the streets giving Christmas presents and vouchers to 48 families, at the same time as carrying out assessments and interventions such as making arrangements for dental appointments, childhood immunisations, COVID vaccines and assessing well-being. The families expressed their sincere thanks for the care and support.
