The Open University

The Open University offers a number of free courses that can be accessed online. Courses cover a wide range of subjects, from English skills for life and supporting children’s mental health and well-being, to the importance of interpersonal skills and planning a better future. There’s even a short course on Discovering Wales and the Welsh. Delivered in English, these courses are also a good way of improving your language skills.

Learning and Improving English Language Skills

BN(O) passport holders in Cardiff, Newport, Swansea, or Wrexham should access the REACH+ ESOL Assessment Hubs providing language assessments and referrals to English for Speakers of Other Languages, (ESOL), courses in those areas. Elsewhere in Wales, ESOL is also widely available in all colleges, and courses, including online courses, are also delivered in the community by Adult Learning Wales.

FAN (Friends and Neighbours) Charity is a group that helps people improve their English language skills through conversation. These groups are designed to provide a friendly, informal setting where individuals can practice speaking English, make new friends, and learn about different cultures. FAN Charity groups typically meet regularly and are open to people of all backgrounds and levels of English proficiency.

Volunteering with local Welsh communities enhances English and Welsh language skills through real-life interactions. Engaging in community activities fosters language learning and cultural exchange, benefiting both volunteers and locals. For more opportunities, visit Volunteering Wales.

Learning Welsh

30 % of people in Wales speak Welsh. Learning Welsh is a great way to find out more about the culture of Wales and to get to know Welsh speaking communities. Adult Learning Wales offer introductory courses in Welsh for Speakers of Other Languages (WSOL).  The following website has good information about learning Welsh and where to find a course.
